They didn't make it to SMRN:s top ten of the Innovate conference, but they got what is even better: the chance to win ESOMAR:s most prestigous price for excellence. This is no contradiction and no sign of bad judgement on either side: the ESOMAR jury reads the papers, we don't.
The winners have much in common: they are both American, they presented alone, they have a genuine and burning interest in pushing market research forward, but most of all, Alison and Tom are two extremely nice and humble persons. It must also be stressed that their oral presentations were very good and interesting - they were certainly considered for our own, very biased top list.

J. Alison Bryant probably has one of the most inspiring jobs in market research and perhaps one of the best employers possible. She gets to work with children on behalf of the TV channel Nickelodeon and it looks like she gets the funding she needs to do the research we would all like to do. As an additional bonus, she got to work together with Marsha Williams, one of our all time conference favourites, before Marsha went on to start her own business not long ago. If Alison was ever in Marshas shadow, she has certainly stepped out of it now.

Tom H. C. Andersen constantly tries to break new methodological ground and did so at the conference by presenting his tool for analysis of open end questions. The interesting thing about this, is that it blurs the boundaries between qualitative and quantitative data and presents a real opportunity to solve the everlasting quest of asking the questions that the respondents wants to reply to. Too bad so few people seems to understand this philosophical aspect of his rather technical presentation.
Those of you based near Stockholm gets a second chance to see Tom at Tendensdagen, arranged by Marknadsförbundet, October 23rd.
